想象一下，如果你是一个穷困潦倒的大学计算机教师，不幸染上了AIDS，又丢掉了工作，圣诞节的夜晚却身无分文，当你好不容易摸到同样贫寒但却愿意收留你的朋友们楼下时，却在公用电话厅遭遇打劫，连身上仅有一件御寒的外套都被抢了……就在这个绝望的倒霉时刻，一个坐在圣诞树下敲着塑料桶的男人向你伸出援手，并且自称是“天使”，你相信吗？

每个人都会有不同的回答，可是那“穷困潦倒的大学计算机教师，不幸染上了AIDS，又丢掉了工作，圣诞节的夜晚却身无分文，好不容易摸到朋友们楼下时，却在公用电话厅遭遇打劫，连身上仅有一件御寒的外套都被抢了”的Tom Collins在一瞬间可能是相信了。
纽约的冬天，寒冷的圣诞节，一个无家可归的流浪者唱着：

Collins在街头挣扎着，圣诞节的一切与他远离，可是当“天使”温柔的声音响起时，他知道他的生命会因为这次邂逅而完全改变。
自称名叫Angel的男人，对Collins说的第一句是“You okay honey?”
他的声音无比温柔，可又带着点特殊的轻佻，于是从此Angel出现了——一个纽约街头真正的天使，尤其是对于Collins，Angel仿佛是命运中注定应该出现在那个奇迹般的圣诞节来拯救他的天使。
不知道是因为Collins的狼狈激发了Angel本来就很旺盛的同情心，还是Angel真的是对Collins一见钟情，这个世俗不允许的爱情故事在圣诞节开始，使得本来冷酷的冬天也变的浪漫起来。
当Collins赞美着圣诞树的美丽时，Angel有点不合时宜的说出了“Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome”，于是这个爱情故事似乎从一开始就笼罩上了一层悲剧的阴影。Angel等待着Collins的反应时，究竟是怎样的心情？是否是忐忑不安？如果Collins表现出反感或者厌恶甚至恐惧，那么之后的一切就都不会发生了。而Collins的回答可能出乎他的意料之外：“As does mine”……
于是一切就理所当然的发生了。

依然是圣诞节的夜晚。
Collins带着Angel重新回到Mark和Roger的公寓时，已经是神采飞扬；当他不无得意的向朋友们介绍他的新恋人Angel Dumott Schunard时，恐怕连Mark和Roger也在瞬间把带着礼物和钱来到公寓里的Angel当成了上帝派来的天使化身。
Angel其实只是个普通的人类，此时的他正沉浸在与Collins相见恨晚的兴奋中，于是他欢快的唱着：“Today for you – tomorrow for me”——这句歌词可以说是Angel的主旋律，当它第一次在剧中出现时，你可以感觉到Angel的喜悦从他的身体里、从他的声音里散逸到他周围的空气中。

依然是圣诞夜。
Angel和Collins参加了Life Support 的聚会，他们明白他们的生命并不长久，唯一的解决方法就是把握现在。
Collins幻想着离开纽约，去圣达菲开一家餐厅，当然幻想仅仅是幻想，他和Angel体内的病毒随时可能发作，死亡从来没有远离过他们……
于是他们所能做的只有互相支持着把握现在。
纽约，圣诞夜，两个刚刚相识就陷入爱情的年轻人唱着“I’ll Cover You ”——
Angel：
“Live in my house

Collins：

I’ll be your tenant

就像他们在歌里唱的一样，他们的爱情是租来的，因为他们实在没有太多的时间。

Angel可能真的不是人类……他出现的太突然，走的也太匆忙；第二幕开始不久，他就在Collins的怀里离开了人世。
Angel在临终时如同梦呓般的唱着：

………… ……”
此时的Angel其实已经没有明天了，他只有用最后的力量告诉Collins自己有多么爱他。

Angel声嘶力竭的唱着“我爱你”，紧接着音乐停止，Angel的生命也停止了。
Collins阴郁的说着：“It’s over”……
Angel走了，离开了，Collins唱着他们最幸福的时刻曾经一起唱的歌“I’ll Cover You ”，朋友们追忆着Angel，唱着“Seasons of Love”：

故事的末尾，当Mimi从死亡线上苏醒时，她说：
